Verona gets unblocked, Sampdoria remounted
Verona-Sampdoria 2-1
Cioffi’s Hellas Verona won its first, well-deserved victory, beating Giampaolo’s Sampdoria at the Bentegodi in a comeback, which has yet to score a league win. Three golden points signed by an unfortunate own goal by the extreme Audero and by the Scot Doig to overturn Caputo’s magnificent goal. Standings: Verona 5, Sampdoria 2. Next round (Sept. 11): Lazio-Verona (Sept. 11, 6 p.m.), Sampdoria-Milan (Sept. 10, 8:45 p.m.)
First Half. Ready and go, Quagliarella pulls out his calling card, goes off on the right, forcing Montipò to deflect, Hellas responds, two corners to no avail. 10′: Henry, one-on-one with Audero, has his shot disallowed but was offside. After 4 matches without a win and 2 points in the standings each, Hellas presses without affecting not so on the other front. To the 1,700 Doriani fans, linked by a historic twinning with the Gialloblù ones, the Scaliger extreme denied the joy of the goal, miraculous on the breakaway of an undisturbed Caputo in the middle of the area. Veronesi forward without making themselves dangerous, Caputo instead turns in the area (40′) and brushes a magnificent parabola that slips into the far corner, impregnable for Montipò: 0-1 to the screams of the Blucerchiata fans. The Scaligeri crowd gets impatient, a spring for Hellas, which equalizes in the 44th minute: a breakaway by the usual Henry, on his third goal in the league and always with a header, the ball touches the crossbar, slams into Audero’s back and ends up in the net, 1-1, this time the scream is yellow-blue. Three of recovery but it’s not over yet. On the contrary, a rejuvenated Hellas puts Lasagna in front of Audero, who rejects his lob, overwhelming the striker: the ball “dances” in the area, the “damper” the quickest is the blond Doig, newly acquired Scottish player, who makes it 2-1, sending the Bentegodi into raptures.
Second half. Enter Gunter for Dawidowicz in Hellas, immediately dangerous with Doig forcing the Samp defense to save in corners. Not satiated the Scot engages Audero in a difficult intervention. On the other front former Verre goes undisturbed in the central corridor but does not kick, favoring the return of the Hellas rearguard. Lasagna (11′) blatantly fails to score his tic-tac-toe, doing everything right except the most important part: he out-jumps Audero, with the goal wide open he kicks it into the corner. Giampaolo looks for the ace equalizer, inserting Gabbiadini and Djuricic, then Villar and Leris, finally Pussetto; Cioffi responds with Kallon, Tameze, then De Paoli and Hongla. The latter deep to Lazovic who engages Audero. Then Doig shows up again, kicking at the first post, Audero recovers his position in extremis and deflects. Again the Dorian extreme says no to Veloso. On the other front, here’s Gabbiadini, a venomous low shot that ends just wide. Fiery finale: Lazovic, great number in the area, kicks at a sure shot, the usual Audero is still miraculous with the help of his rearguard. Five minutes of recovery, triple whistle: 2-1.
