Camila Giorgi rises, Nuria Brancaccio explodes
WTA Updates.
Several changes in the women’s world rankings after the latest WTA update released at the conclusion of the US Open. As far as Italian players are concerned, three new “bests” (Lucia Bronzetti, Elisabetta Cocciaretto, Nuria Brancaccio), a decisive step forward in terms of points (Lucrezia Stefanini) and a new entry among the top ten Italian players in the ranking (Brancaccio, a finalist in the WTA 125 in Bari, who climbs 133 places in one fell swoop) should be noted.
Leading them is always Martina Trevisan, who is confirmed at number 27, three lengths from her own record (24) reached last July 18. The 28-year-old left-hander from Tuscany — out in the first round at Flushing Meadows complicit in the left thigh muscle soreness that had already forced her to retire in the second round in Cleveland — in this 2022 won her first WTA trophy on clay in Rabat and reached the semifinals at Roland Garros, a career-best result in a Slam.
Jasmine Paolini, number 55 WTA, climbs one step, while Lucia Bronzetti, now ranked 57th, gains two places, again touching up her personal best.
On the other hand, both Camila Giorgi, who rises to No. 61, and Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who further touches up her “best” by going to sit on the No. 93 seat, gain six positions: the 21-year-old from Fermo had entered the top 100 for the first time in her career last August 22, and in New York she was the only Italian – between the men’s and women’s draw – to pass the qualifiers.
In the top 10 of the WTA ranking, the absolute certainty is represented by the undisputed leader, Poland’s Iga Swiatek, queen of New York (third career Slam): she has more than twice as many points as the direct pursuer, Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur who, thanks to the final at the US Open, takes back the second world ranking and is now followed by Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit.
Two “new-entries”: the U.S. Coco Gauff, who, thanks to the quarterfinals in New York, makes her entrance for the first time in her career into the top ten, placing herself at number eight, and the French Caroline Garcia, a semifinalist, who grabs the tenth seat: for the 28-year-old from Sain-Germain-en-Laye, this is a return to the top, which came at the end of a summer season illuminated also by her success in Cincinnati. On the other hand, Russia’s Daria Kasatkina and Spain’s Garbine Muguruza bid farewell to the world elite for the time being.
