Eurobasket numbers at the Assago Forum

The Berlin weekend closed the 41st edition of the FIBA EuroBasket, which in the first phase was played in Cologne, Tbilisi, Prague and Milan. Extraordinary are the numbers produced by the event organized at the Assago Forum, because extraordinary was the effort put in by the Italian Basketball Federation and its commercial advisor Master Group Sport. Here are some figures.

More than 75,000 tickets were issued, with many fans coming from 70 countries and five continents as well as from all over Europe. From New Zealand to Canada, via Argentina and Brazil, China, Kenya and South Africa. Of these nearly 4,000 Estonian fans supported the team by staying in Milan for nearly ten days.

More than 2,000 passes were issued (73 nations), of which about 70 percent were for just staying at the Milan venue.

More than 200 total Media (including newspapers, broadcasters, photographers and Media staff) were present in Milan, almost half of them foreigners and from 15 nations.

Crucial support came from the 170 volunteers who “donated” 8,660 hours in Milan over the 13 days. The internationality of the event is also understood by their diverse backgrounds: China, Greece, Spain, Kenya, Uruguay, Iran, Colombia, Argentina, Romania, Peru, Poland, France and the United States.

More than 12,000 meals were provided in Milan, including dinner and lunch, in the Hospitality area and to all the staff who attended the event.

Twenty coaches and thirty cars made up the fleet in Milan that transported teams, delegates and VIPs for more than 800 total rides.

An event like EuroBasket 2022 was a flywheel for Milan’s economy and tourism: 2,400 overnight stays for teams, 800 for Delegates, and over 3,800 for Estonian fans alone. To these must be added the other fans and Media operators.

Many absolutely prestigious presences enriched the Milanese parterre of EuroBasket 2022: many sports and political institutions, representatives of partner companies and faces of entrepreneurship, as well as numerous VIPs from the world of Italian, international and NBA basketball, responded present to the call of Basketball and the Azzurra team.

From Sept. 1 to Sept. 8 in the iconic Piazza del Duomo location, the Fan Zone, a 1,300-square-meter arena, welcomed the many thousands of basketball fans from Italy and from around the world to a multitude of shows and entertainment, all united by the theme of the basketball. The Fan Zone was organized and managed by Master Group Sport, commercial advisor to the Italian Basketball Federation.

A major communication campaign on all mainstream media and a promotional activity starting in 2021 involved the basketball and generalist world in support of EuroBasket 2022 Milan. As well as the numerous events leading up to the event (from the Countdown clock with 100 days to go to the inauguration of the Fan Zone) with over 70 Media, institutions and partners attending. Then on to the side activities put on during the event. From the Media Day in the Sky Sport studios in Milan, through the short film “Un Coach come padre” the incredible story of Sandro Gamba premiered at Cinema Ante, to the event in Bocconi “Eurobasket 2022 – Athletes and careers: who takes responsibility?”. Every day, the Twitch ItalBasket channel hosted “GranBasket,” a one-hour Live hosted by Margherita Granbassi who hosted personalities from sports, entertainment and culture who came to Milan to follow the European Championship.

A EuroBasket 2022 Milan Sustainability Plan was drafted, involving all stakeholders. These included Onlus and nonprofit associations that attended the Fan Zone. A Left Over project that involved the National Teams, with athletes donating some items for a social and sports inclusion activity in Milan once the round was over. A food recovery project that was used in socially beneficial projects was also initiated, benefiting people in need. In order to encourage the attendance of Ukrainian fans and citizens to the September 5 match at the Forum, the “Ukraine-Italy Promotion” was launched with reduced rates on some categories of tickets reserved for Ukrainian citizens.
