Laver Cup, Frances Tiafoe gives Team World triumph
After canceling four match points in the second set, the U.S. won against Tsitsipas in a super tie-break
Unexpectedly, the way things had turned out at the end of the second day-which had seen Team Europe prevail over Team World 8-4-the John McEnroe-coached lineup turned it all around on the final day of matches, winning the three matches it needed to lift, for the first time since this competition has existed, the Laver Cup.
First, in Sunday’s opening match, Auger-Aliassime and Jack Sock had gotten the better of the pair of Matteo Berrettini and Andy Murray. Next, the Canadian surprisingly beat Nole Djokovic in two sets, leading Team World for the first time (on the final day of matches, each win is worth three points).
Finally, and this is very recent news, a never tame Frances Tiafoe bent in three tight partials Stefanos Tsitsipas, who wasted four match points during the tie-break of the second set. In the super tie-break of the deciding partial, memorable was a centering shot by the American, who mocked the Greek with an outstanding recovery after a bunt by the latter.
Team World thus triumphs for the first time in the London event, which will be remembered forever because it coincided with the farewell to tennis of a legend like Roger Federer.
