Djokovic reveals Carlos Alcaraz’s ‘secret’
Novak Djokovic, speaking at a press conference after his winning debut at the Paris-Bercy Masters 1000 where he defeated American Maxime Cressy in two sets, also spoke about Carlos Alcaraz.
The Serbian tennis player began like this, “I am happy with the way I played. I was able to take my chances when they presented themselves, although I did not convert all the break points. It was a difficult first game against a tennis player who serves extremely strong and fast, both with the first and second. I think he is really the only player who goes to the net on every serve. I didn’t make too many unforced errors. It was all positive on my part.”
He then turned to Carlos Alcaraz, praising his coach, “He had a great year. He deserves to be in that position because of the results he has had. In the end, results are the best parameter for ranking. He has won a Grand Slam and played consistently well. Despite being only 19 years old, he plays with a lot of maturity and energy. He also has a great coach, one who has been in his shoes, Juan Carlos Ferrero.”
“It’s a perfect combination,” Djokovic continued, “He knows exactly what you’re going through, how to help you mentally withstand the pressure of being number one and everyone who wants to dethrone you. This is just his beginning, but he is hungry for success. Now he will have to defend the points, something different. When you are the one chasing you have less pressure, when they are chasing you and when everyone wants to be where you are things change mentally. We’ll see how it goes.”
“To me it changed a lot as a person, not so much as a professional. Thanks to my wife, I was able to continue playing tennis at this level. It’s important to have someone to support you in everything, and she sacrificed a lot so I could compete. I had one of my best seasons right after I became a father in 2014. At the end of the year I became a father, and 2015 was one of my best years. It was an immense source of energy and motivation,” Nole commented, about becoming a father.
