Corrado Barazzutti, ironic dig at Jannik Sinner
“With me Captain Sinner did not want to be part of the team, maybe he disliked me…”
Former Italy Davis Cup captain Corrado Barazzutti in an interview with Oasport took stock of 2022 Italian tennis: “I would say good, in the Slams Jannik Sinner was definitely convincing and came very close to going beyond the quarterfinals where he stopped. If we consider that he then lost at Wimbledon and the US Open to the winner of the tournament, one can only be positive.”
On criticism of the South Tyrolean: “In Italy you don’t have a lot of patience, you want everything and right away. We were probably deluded because, given Jannik’s great precocity, some stages were burned and it was thought that in 2022 he could already win a Slam. Honestly, as far as we have said, he has not even gone that far if we evaluate who he lost to in London and New York. However, we are talking about a 21-year-old guy who has already achieved some remarkable results.”
However, Barazzutti did not spare an ironic dig at Sinner: “Am I envious of Volandri for the group he has at his disposal? A little bit yes because really Italy is a very strong team. When I was captain, Sinner never had him available, he didn’t want to be part of the team. Who knows, maybe he disliked me….”
