Billie Jean King Cup: Italy without Camila Giorgi knocked out by Switzerland
Bitter debut for Blue Women in tournament finals debut
Bitter debut for Tathiana Garbin’s Italy at the Billie Jean King Cup. The Azzurre, without the injured Camila Giorgi, were defeated by Switzerland 3-0.
At the Emirates Arena in Glasgow, Italy lost the opening match to Elisabetta Cocciaretto, who succumbed in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(5) to Jil Teichmann in a match that lasted more than three hours. A sharper defeat for Jasmine Paolini against world number 12 Belinda Bencic, who won 7-5, 6-3.
Paolini then took the doubles court shortly afterwards along with teammate Trevisan: the two were defeated by the Bencic/Teichmann pair 6-7, 1-6. The next match is scheduled for Thursday against Canada; however, hopes of qualifying for the next round are slim.
