Dario Costa tells about his perfect tunnel
Dario Costa is an aviator who has a beautiful story to tell. And he has done so by writing a very interesting book, ‘The Perfect Tunnel’ (Minerva Editions), with Biagio D’Angelo. Born in 1980 in Manchester to an Italian father and Iranian mother, who had just fled a Tehran put to the sword by Khomeini’s revolution, Dario lived first in the Libyan desert and then on the outskirts of Bologna, without knowing a word of Italian. He soon fell in love with air travel just as he realized he was suffering from vertigo. And soon, after realizing that he was not interested in becoming an airline pilot, he set his goal: to be one of the twelve pilots in the world who each year take part in the Red Bull Air Race, a competition between state-of-the-art “racing” planes, in which pilots must fly as fast as possible through an obstacle course consisting of breakable pylons 25 meters high, touching 400 km/h and facing acceleration that exceeds up to 12 times the force of gravity. A goal that Costa not only achieved but also saw him win.
‘The Perfect Tunnel’ is, therefore, the story of a dream come true and at the same time the tale of an obsession. It is an unfiltered journey inside the soul of a great athlete that tells for the first time the world of sport air flight and the description of the most extreme feat ever conceived in the history of motorsport: the crossing of twin tunnels aboard an airplane at the speed of over 300 km/h. This feat, which took place near Istanbul at dawn on September 4, 2021, has already become the subject of scientific studies and publications.
