Ferrari sports director Mekies: “We wanted to differentiate the strategy with the two drivers.”

Ferrari sport director Laurent Mekies to Sky tried to explain yet another strategic error by the Cavallino’s race wall, which in Q3 of the Brazilian GP qualifying sent Charles Leclerc to the track on intermediate tires in dry conditions, hoping for the arrival of rain.

A mistake paid for with the tenth position on the grid by the Monegasque. “It was a lottery. In Q3 we decided to differentiate the strategy with the two drivers because we had indications that rain was coming. That came a couple of minutes later. It is clear that in hindsight you can say that we could have done differently, but it was not as simple as you want to describe it,” is Mekies’ justification.

“Leclerc? We are sorry that he could not fulfill his potential, but they were complicated conditions that changed quickly. We have to improve, and this experience is also needed.”
