Bruno Fernandes shuts down the controversy over Cristiano Ronaldo. In his own way
“For him it was a funny thing, for me not so much.”
The video released the past few days, capturing a greeting, which appeared to most to be a bit ‘chilly’, between Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes in the locker room of Portugal’s pre-World Cup training camp, has been making the rounds on the web. Accomplice also to the subsequent episode with Joao Cancelo, who appeared somewhat reluctant to joke in training with CR7, the belief was created of a soured relationship between the captain of the Lusitanians and some of the most representative players in the squad. Nothing could be more untrue, to hear the words released by the former Novara, Sampdoria and Udinese player in the press conference on the eve of Portugal-Ghana, the Iberians’ debut match at Qatar 2022.
“He asked me if I arrived by boat, but in fact I was two hours inside a normal airliner, he instead has his own private jet. Several times he invited me to go with him, also because he hates to arrive late using a normal flight. Anyway we laughed about it, even though for him it was a funny thing, and for me not so much,” the footballer explained with a veil of sarcasm. “Now we have other things to think about, he always said that the most important trophy he won was the one in 2016 – the European Championship with Portugal, ed – and that explains a lot about what you think.”
He could not miss a remark on the divorce between the Portuguese champion and Manchester United, a club in which Bruno Fernandes himself still plays: ” It’s nice to be his teammate, with the club and here, but we all know that nothing is forever. About Manchester we don’t talk, we are only focused on Portugal. It was important for Cristiano to know about his future but, of course, we didn’t talk about it. His was a completely personal decision, which only concerns him and his family. And then, as I said, now we are totally focused on the World Cup,” he concluded.
