Italtennis captain Filippo Volandri to Sky cannot hide his disappointment over the failure to qualify for the Davis Cup final: “There is bitterness for the final outcome because we were hoping for it, but the boys gave everything. Bolelli injured his calf and we could not risk him.”

The decision to use Matteo Berrettini, who has a foot injury, in the doubles alongside Fabio Fognini has and will be discussed: “Insert Sonego? He couldn’t even tie his shoes because of the strain in singles. We pulled Berrettini out of the hat; I couldn’t ask anything of Matteo. He has been doing double training for the last two days and the happy note is that he is doing well physically and had no problems. However, he was clearly lacking in match rhythm. Now we look to the future with confidence.”
