Panatta would have fielded Sonego or Musetti.

Tennis Italy emerged defeated from the Davis Cup semifinal against Canada. The Azzurri had pulled ahead with Sonego’s win over Shapovalov, only to be reeled back in following Auger-Aliassime’s victories over Musetti and the Canadian doubles’ win over the Berrettini-Fognini pair.

Adriano Panatta, as a commentator on Rai2, had his say on the choice of fielding the Roman tennis player alongside Fabio Fognini, due to Simone Bolelli’s injury, instead of one of the two players already on the singles court: “I hold Berrettini in high esteem, but honestly what could be expected from a player with those characteristics who had not played for a month? I was surprised by Filippo Volandri’s decision, and maybe one of Lorenzo Sonego and Lorenzo Musetti could have been chosen: the former was playing with enthusiasm and could cope with fatigue, and the latter at the end had not spent too much against Aliassime.”
