Angelo Binaghi supports Jannik Sinner’s choice.
Angelo Binaghi stands with Jannik Sinner
Nearly a week has passed since Italy’s Davis Cup loss, which came in the deciding doubles match with Canada in which Matteo Berrettini replaced the injured Simone Bolelli to partner Fabio Fognini. However, the controversy has not yet died down, both with regard to captain Filippo Volandri’s decision to bet on Matteo Berrettini, returning from a foot injury, in doubles and with regard to the person who forfeited the Davis Cup finals-Jannik Sinner-a victim of a hand injury suffered in the last tournament played in the season: the Paris-Bercy Masters 1000.
On the latter issue, Angelo Binaghi, president of the Italian Tennis Federation, had his say in an interview with il Messaggero: “Let’s say this: what Berrettini did is commendable, but even team victories in tennis are the sum of individual ones, and if Sinner made his decision, as happened when he renounced the Olympics, because he felt he would prepare better elsewhere, I respect it.”
The South Tyrolean tennis player meanwhile has just returned to training and is preparing for the first event of the new season, the ATP 250 in Adelaide, scheduled for January 1-8, 2023.
