Soccer stars (and more) pay tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo
LeBron James also commented on CR7’s emotional farewell to the World Cup dream.
The quarterfinal match between Morocco and Portugal will remain etched in the eyes and hearts of all soccer fans for a long time. In addition to rightfully entering the history of the World Cup for representing the qualification to the semifinals of a team from the African Continent – an event that has never happened before – the match will be remembered for CR7’s last dance in the World Cup. After five editions played as a protagonist – the five-time Ballon d’Or is the only one to have scored in so many consecutive World Cups – the King abdicated. First by ending up on the bench – as early as the round of 16 against Switzerland, and later against the ‘Lions of the Atlas’ -, and then by going out defeated on the field at the hands of the North African national team.
In a long post on Instagram, Cristiano Ronaldo recounted his broken dream, reiterating that he has always given his heart and soul for the Seleçao jersey. An emotional and sincere confession, which has not left indifferent as much some legends of the past, as the outstanding players of the present. And not only from the world of soccer.
“My friend, thank you for making us smile,” Pelé replied, adding the emoticon of joined hands. Kylian Mbappé, who has never hidden his admiration for the Lusitanian soccer star, on the other hand posted emoticons of clasped hands, a crown and a goat, which in social slang stands for ‘the greatest of all time’ (from the English GOAT whose literal translation is ‘goat’).
LeBron James, a living basketball phenomenon and huge soccer fan, also paid tribute to the Portuguese by posting a crown and joined hands as a symbol of thanks, accompanying it with one word. “LEGEND!”
