The Swiss highlights a problem with today’s tennis
The recently retired winner of 20 Slam titles, Roger Federer, has pointed out a problem with today’s tennis and the excessive weight given to statistics.
“We live in a world based on numbers and statistics. We like to improve our statistics and break records so that we can determine who is the strongest,” explained the former Swiss tennis player.
“As soon as you win a Slam or become world number one, you are immediately asked how long you will stay on top or when you will win your next Slam. The fun has taken a back seat. This mechanism has been fueled to such an extent that it has become a problem, at least in my opinion,” Federer concluded.
Roger Federer has won 20 Grand Slam events, including as many as eight Wimbledons, an all-time record in men’s tennis history. The Swiss also became the oldest tennis player in the history of the Open Era to hold the top position in the Atp rankings. A tennis legend and inimitable for his elegant strokes, Federer announced his retirement on September 15, 2022, playing his last match, in doubles, at the Laver Cup paired with eternal rival and friend Rafael Nadal.
