Emiliano Martinez reveals the reason for his singular exultation
Martinez explains gesture after award presentation
Emiliano Martinez was one of the key players in Argentina’s victory at the World Cup in Qatar. The Albiceleste goalkeeper, thanks to his saves in shots from the penalty spot and truly prodigious interventions – such as the miraculous save on Kolo Muani as extra time expired in the final against France – was awarded as the best goalkeeper of the competition, receiving a golden glove.
The Aston Villa defender wanted to celebrate by carrying the trophy in his groin area and showing it to the French fans. “I did it because the French booed me. Pride doesn’t work with me,” he explained after the game to the Argentine media La Red.
“I dedicate the title to my family. I come from a very humble background, I went to England very young. I want to dedicate it to them,” concluded the number one of the newly crowned world champions.
