F1, how many GPs vying for a place in the circus: candiidate cities
Grand prix racing for a place in the circus
The 2022 Formula 1 championship went into the archives with the victory of Red Bull and Max Verstappen, after a whopping 22 Grands Prix run, but in the coming years the number is set to grow further. Indeed, there are several cities and tracks that aspire to a place in the circus.
One of the prime candidates for the coming years is Madrid, where either a race could be held on the Jarama track or a city race among the streets of the Spanish capital. However, it will not be so easy to get in among the cities that will host a GP, partly because of the wishes of Formula 1 CEO and former Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali, who would seem intent on not having more than a third of the races on European tracks.
According to reports in the Iberian newspaper ‘AS,’ however, the presence of other major European cities among the candidates will not allow Formula 1 to land in Madrid before 2026. In fact, Portimao, Nice, Istanbul and Nurburg are the ‘rivals’ of the Spanish capital.
