Cagliari, two names for after Liverani
Two names for the Sardinian club’s bench
On Tuesday, Dec. 20, Cagliari announced the dismissal of coach Fabio Liverani with a note released through the club’s official channels: “Cagliari announces the dismissal of Fabio Liverani. Fatal for him the disappointing results. Only two victories in the last 10 days and a ranking that tells of a 14th place, well below expectations. With Liverani also say goodbye to all members of his staff. The team is temporarily entrusted to Roberto Muzzi, club manager of the Sardinians.”
The island club is considering several profiles for the Rossoblù bench: the first and most popular name is that of Claudio Ranieri, who already led the Sardinian team between 1988 and 1991. The second option to replace Liverani is the track that would lead to Roberto D’Aversa, who has been suspended since January 2022 after his exoneration from Sampdoria.
It remained in the history of Italian soccer the Scudetto won by Cagliari at the end of the 1969-70 season. Manlio Scopigno was on the bench while the team’s star was Gigi Riva: the bomber scored 21 goals, boasting the title of top scorer for the third time in just four years. Riva ended his very long experience on the island in 1977, having scored something like 164 goals.
