United Cup: Italy defeated but still in semifinals
United Cup: Italy defeated but still in semifinals
Painless defeat for Italy against Poland in the ongoing United Cup in Australia. Deciding the match against the Poles was the mixed doubles with Camilla Rosatello and Lorenzo Musetti succumbing 6-1 6-2 to Iga Swiatek and Hubert Hurkacz.
However, Italy was repechaged for the semifinals since the formula provides for only three city final acts (the quarterfinals). So to land in the semifinals are not only the three winners, but also the best among the losers. In this case precisely Italy.
Italy was already virtually certain of qualification to the semifinals even before the mixed doubles: the win/loss ratio excluded Great Britain and the set coefficient was already important compared to Greece and Croatia. The Azzurri are therefore expected to play a very complicated semifinal against the United States, which can count on Jessica Pegula (No. 3 in the WTA ranking), Madison Keys (No. 11 WTA), Taylor Fritz (No. 9 ATP) and Frances Tiafoe (No. 19).
