United Cup, Lucia Bronzetti redeems Matteo Berrettini: Italy in final
Italy beats Greece 3-1, Azzurri in United Cup final
Italy is in the final of the United Cup, the tournament for mixed-team national teams in its first edition, which kicked off the 2023 season in Australia. The point that decided the semifinal against Greece came late Saturday morning in Italy thanks to Lucia Bronzetti, who defeated Valentini Grammatikopoulou 6-2, 6-3, making the knockout loss suffered by Matteo Berrettini against Stefanos Tsitsipas irrelevant.
The Italian, class of 1998, did not tremble in the face of the responsibility she was facing, making the most of the difference in ranking (Bronzetti is No. 54 WTA, Grammatikopoulou No. 199): after 79′ of play the match ended 6-2, 6-3, with the representative of the Bel Paese always in control and never trailing.
Italy will therefore play for the United Cup on Sunday against the United States: the Americans booked a place in the final by beating Poland without any particular worries, dragged by Taylor Fritz, Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys.
