Champions League, Benfica and Borussia Dortmund win
Champions League: first leg of round of 16 is won by Benfica and Borussia Dortmund
The second day of the Champions League round of 16 saw the victories of Benfica and Borussia Dortmund over Bruges and Chelsea, respectively: for the Lusitanians Joao Mario and Neres signed the success in Belgium, while the Germans needed only a great goal from Adeyemi to defeat the English.
It was all decided in the second half in the Bruges match: in the 51st minute Joao Mario converted a penalty, procured by Goncalo Ramos who was fouled by Hendry. In the final, on a defensive error by the hosts, Neres sprinted toward the goal and beat Mignolet.
At Signal Iduna Park, too, the match was settled in the second half by a genuine gem from Adeyemi, who went on a counterattack, dribbled past Enzo Fernandez and brought down Kepa, before depositing the ball into the back of the net. There was no shortage of chances for the Englishmen with a Joao Felix cross in the first half and a miracle by Kobel on Enzo Fernandez as time expired.
The return matches are scheduled for March 7: Benfica-Bruges at ‘da Luz’ and Chelsea-Borussia Dortmund at Stamford Bridge.
