Kitayama triumphs in Florida, no No. 1 for Rory McIlroy
California tennis player wins Arnold Palmer Invitational and foils Northern Irishman’s return to throne
Kurt Kitayama has won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, a Pga Tour tournament based in Florida. The 30-year-old California golfer claimed his first victory on the circuit, beating Harris English and Rory McIlroy, who must postpone his assault on the world number one by one stroke.
The top spot in the world ranking thus remains with Spaniard Jon Rahm, who finished 39th. Kitayama finished the last round with 72 strokes and an overall score of -9. The best of the Italians was Francesco Molinari, who took a good 14th place with a score of -2: a good sign for the Italian who will try to be selected again for the Ryder Cup.
