Super Dorothea Wierer: wins and shortens standings
Another resounding performance by Dorothea Wierer lit up the Oestersund stadium, which closed the World Cup stage with a women’s mass start. The 33-year-old South Tyrolean financier, winner in last Thursday’s individual event, delivered another day of spectacle by winning by strength and intelligence a race that from the opening lap appeared to be reserved for three other competitors, with Julia Simon, Lou Jeanmonnot and Marte Olsbu Roeiseland a span above the competition.
The quartet’s lead quickly increased until the final polygon, when Simon and Roeiseland made a mistake, while Wierer kept her cool by showing up on the closing lap with a few seconds’ lead over Jeanmonnot, which even increased as she approached the finish line, reached with her arms raised by Dorothea celebrating individual triumph number 16 of her World Cup career, while Jenamonnot and Simon kept her company on the podium. Two errors, however, affected the performance of Lisa Vittozzi, who fought grimly to recover from 30th and last place following the first series, up to 18th, despite four overall errors. Twenty-second, on the other hand, was Hanna Auchentaller with three errors and a judicious conduct.
In the overall standings, Wierer rises powerfully to second with 859 points, while Simon remains in the lead with 1003 points and Lisa Vittozzi is third with 818 points when there are three races to go, next weekend in Oslo. The specialty ranking with one race to go sees Simon leading with 225 points ahead of Chevalier-Bouchet with 146, Jeanmonnot with 143 and Wierer with 135.
