Paola Egonu’s Vakifbank overwhelmed in Champions League

It was a day to forget on Thursday for Vakifbank, the club in whose ranks Paola Egonu plays: in the first leg semifinal of the women’s volleyball Champions League, the Italian player and her teammates were overwhelmed by Fenerbache, in an Istanbul derby played at the European level: 3-0 the set count, with scores of 25-10, 25-23, 25-20 certifying the yellow-blue domination.

Egonu still scored 17 points, confirming that she gave it her all. A miracle, however, will be needed in the return match to overturn the three-set disadvantage and qualify for the final of the top continental club competition.

In the final, the winner of the Turkish derby will face the winner of the challenge between Novara and another Istanbul team, Eczacibasi: in the first leg, the Piedmontese team won 3-2, the minimum possible advantage to face the return match in Turkey.
