Matteo Berrettini gets unstuck in Monte Carlo: Cressy falls in two sets
The spell is over, and a victory returns.
Matteo Berrettini is off to the best possible start at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, beating American Maxime Cressy in two sets. The Roman won the contest in one hour and 26 minutes of play, closing on 6-4, 6-2. It had been since Acapulco that he had not had a success on the ATP circuit, and for him it is his first ever in the Principality.
The match began in no easy way for the Roman, as the first six games wore on without anyone being able to break his opponent’s serve. Delicate in particular was the third, which Cressy took home after an impressive 12 points, but without Berrettini winning any break point. He then nullifies a crucial one at 3-2 for the U.S., evens the game count and takes the 4-3 thanks to a crucial break. In the ninth game he then fails to capitalize on two set points, closing the score in the tenth.
The second set starts in the best way for Berrettini, who already in the first game gets his first break point, leaving his opponent with 0 points. He then snatches his serve on the third attempt, repeating himself two sets later (this time with the American not picking up any points). At 4-0 it is enough to control the match, which ends in the eighth game by taking advantage of the very first match point of the match.
