Italy at Billie Jean King Cup Finals

After the two singles defeats of Jasmine Paolini and Elisabetta Cocciaretto, which had brought the score between Italy and Slovakia to 2-2, the same Cocciaretto and Martina Trevisan scored the decisive point late Saturday afternoon by winning 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in the doubles match against the Hruncakova/Mihalikova pair: the Italian team, therefore, earns a pass to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals.

The two blues started badly and went down 3-1 during the first set, but managed to recover with lucidity and, thanks to two breaks won in the sixth and tenth games, closed the first fraction on 6-4. With the same score, however, it was the two Slovak athletes who won the second fraction, then finding the strength to take a 5-3 lead in the third and decisive set as well.

With their backs to the wall, Cocciaretto and Trevisan pulled out their claws and won four consecutive games, allowing captain Tathiana Garbin and the other girls engaged between Friday and Saturday to breathe a huge sigh of relief: appointment in November for the final phase of the “Davis” for women.
