WTA Madrid: sudden withdrawal for Camila Giorgi
Camila Giorgi raises the white flag
Camila Giorgi’s adventure at the Madrid WTA ends a little less than a couple of hours after it began, due to knee problems that forced her to retire after two sets. Therefore, it is her opponent, Egyptian Mayar Sherif, who passes the round.
A real pity for the Marche athlete, who had started very well bringing home rather easily the first set, closed 6 games to 4. In the second fraction, Giorgi found herself ahead 3-2, but began to feel a discomfort in her knee that limited her game: on 4-5 she played the “medical timeout” card, but the problem worsened minute after minute: the 31-year-old nevertheless ended the set, won 6-4 by Sherif, deciding, however, to retire to avoid further problems.
It will therefore be Mayar Sherif who will face Anhelina Kalinina in the second round of the Madrid WTA.
