Andrea Vavassori can celebrate on Thursday one of the most significant achievements of his career: in the first round of the Madrid Masters 1000, in fact, the 27-year-old born in Turin defeated Andy Murray, a veteran of the circuit but above all former number 1 in the Ranking: 6-2, 7-6(7) the partials in favor of Vavassori, who finished the match in one hour and thirty-three minutes.
At the limits of perfection the first set of the tricolor athlete: immediately two break leads for the 4-0, Murray is left with only crumbs. The Scot also lost a game on his own serve in the opening bars of the second set but recovered it, taking it to the tie-break: five match points were needed for Vavassori to close, but in the end it was party time for the current number 164 in the world rankings.
Vavassori thus flies to the second round, where a challenging opponent awaits him, to say the least: it is Daniil Medvedev, the tournament’s No. 2 seed and current world No. 3.
