Fred Kerley wins the 200 in Doha

Fred Kerley won the most anticipated event of Diamond League night in Doha, Qatar, the men’s 200-meter flat. The American sprinter made up for an imperfect start with a flawless second half, finishing the distance in 19 seconds and 92 hundredths, with 0.3 m/s wind in his favor.

Kerley thus sends, indirectly, another message to his rival, Italy’s Marcell Jacobs: the two had “caught” each other in words in recent days, and promised each other battle on the track. A battle, however, that has not yet taken place: Jacobs, in fact, was not present in Doha, as announced some time ago.

Kerley’s victory aside, the Qatari leg of the Diamond League recorded among the men the successes of Pedro Pichardo in the triple jump (third was Italy’s Andy Diaz, whose 17.80 could not be recorded as an Italian record because of the strong wind in his favor), Lamecha Girma in the 3000 meters, Rai Benjamin in the 400 hurdles, Slimane Moula in the 800 meters, Neeraj Chopra in the javelin and Kristjan Ceh in the discus throw. Among women, victories for Sha’Carri Richardson in the 100 meters, Marileidy Paulino in the 400, Katie Moon in the pole vault, Winfred Mutile Yavi in the 3000 steeplechase and, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn in the 100 hurdles.
