Giro 2023: Kaden Groves win in Salerno, Remco Evenepoel falls again

Australian Kaden Groves of Alpecin-Deceunink sprinted to victory in the fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia, the 171-km Atripalda-Salerno, which was characterized by bad weather and many crashes. In fact, with about 5 km to go Primoz Roglic crashed and with less than 3 km to go, so already in the zone covered by the neutralization, Remco Evenepoel ended up on the ground for the second time today. We will see if the Belgian world champion and pink jersey until yesterday suffered any physical consequences.

Those beaten by Groves’ winning sprint were San Salvo winner Jonathan Milan, former rainbow winner Mads Pedersen and Alberto Dainese, while Mark Cavendish, fifth, skidded fearfully on the slippery asphalt twice before going down two meters from the finish. Norway’s Andreas Leknessund retained the pink jersey. Tomorrow 162 km with start and finish in Naples and two climbs in the central part, the Valico di Chiunzi and the Picco Sant’Angelo.
