Internazionali d’Italia: Stefanos Tsitsipas is too much for Lorenzo Sonego
Rome Master 1000: Lorenzo Sonego eliminated with some regrets
No dice for Lorenzo Sonego in the Internazionali d’Italia round of 16: The Italian was eliminated by Greek tennis player Stefanos Tsitsipas in two sets (3-6 6-7) after more than two hours of play.
Match played over two days due to rain: on Monday evening the Greek had won the first set 6-3 thanks to the break won in the sixth game, then the rain had sent the players back to the locker room.
Re-entering the court early Tuesday afternoon, the second set was more tightly contested and went all the way to the tie-break after Sonego squandered two set points at 6-5 in his favor, but in reply. Having escaped danger for Tsitsipas, in the tie-break the number 5 seed was glacial and at the first useful match point closed for 7 points to 3.
Tsitsipas thus advances to the round of 16 where he will meet the winner of the match between Lorenzo Musetti and Francis Tiafoe, which was also suspended by rain and will resume shortly with the Italian ahead 2-1 in the deciding set.
