Roland Garros qualifiers: Zeppieri, Vavassori and Gigante advance
Roland Garros qualifiers: 3 Azzurri in the second round
On the first day of qualifying for the Roland Garros main draw, the balance of the Azzurri in the competition was in perfect parity: 3 Italian tennis players entered the second round, as many were eliminated.
Reaching the second round were Giulio Zeppieri, Matteo Gigante and Andrea Vavassori. All three overcame their respective opponents in two sets: the former beat Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili with a score of 6-4 6-1, the latter got rid of South Korean Seong Chan Hong 7-5 6-4, while the latter overcame Frenchman Titouan Droguet 6-3 7-6.
In contrast, Luciano Darderi, Lorenzo Giustino and Luca Nardi were eliminated. If the former lost rather sharply to Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis, the same cannot be said for the other two: Giustino succumbed only in the third set to Portugal’s Frederico Ferreira Silva (7-6 6-7 1-6), while Nardi surrendered 2-6 7-6 5-7 to Chile’s Alejandro Tabilo.
Eight other Italians will be involved on Tuesday, including Francesco Passaro and Raul Brancaccio.
