Mark Cavendish’s imperial sprint in Rome, Giro d’Italia 2023 is Primoz Roglic’s

The Giro d’Italia 2023 came to an end in Rome’s Via dei Fori Imperiali with an imperial sprint, it has to be said, by Mark Cavendish. The 38-year-old Briton from the Isle of Man and Astana rider literally took all his opponents off his wheel, starting with Luxembourg’s Alex Kirsch and Filippo Fiorelli.

The final triumph, however, belonged to Primoz Roglic, who won the pink race just 14 seconds ahead of Britain’s Geraint Thomas, who kept him on his toes until the very end, and is the first Slovenian to win it thanks to his feat in yesterday’s time trial at Monte Lussari.

These are Roglic’s first words, “We experienced a roller coaster of a race, but then I got my breath back. And this is a spectacular day. I enjoy this beautiful day, I can’t describe these moments in words.”

Here are the winners of the other jerseys: cyclamen jersey (points classification) for Jonathan Milan, blue jersey (best climber) for France’s Thibaut Pinot, white jersey (best young rider) for Portugal’s Joao Almeida.
