Roland Garros: Lorenzo Musetti, Lorenzo Sonego and Sara Errani in the second round
A very positive day for Italian tennis at the opening day of the Roland Garros 2023 edition: five out of five of our representatives, three men and two women, in fact won their first round matches.
After Matteo Arnaldi and Camila Giorgi, Lorenzo Musetti, Lorenzo Sonego and Sara Errani snatched the pass for the second round. The Tuscan from Carrara beat Sweden’s Mikael Ymer 7-5 6-2 6-4 in just over two and a half hours, suffering in the first set but then picking up the pace.
The Romagnola, a finalist in 2012 but who had not played in these parts for three years, remounted and defeated Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann 3-6 6-4 6-2 in nearly two hours and 20 minutes. The Turin native, to finish, gave up a set but managed to get the better of U.S. Ben Shelton 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-3 in just under three hours.
Musetti awaits the winner between Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko and Germany’s Oscar Otte, Sonego the winner of the French derby between Adrian Mannarino and Ugo Humbert, and Errani the winner between Hungary’s Anna Bondar and Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu.
