Alizé Cornet doesn’t tell Camila Giorgi off
Alizé Cornet expressed all her disappointment in a press conference after her first-round defeat at Roland Garros against Camila Giorgi. “I’m disappointed that I didn’t play the way I wanted, it wasn’t a good match,” she admitted. “During the second set I had some chances, she made a lot of errors, but I wasn’t really in the match. Her style of play puts a lot of pressure on you. I tried to find my rhythm, but I lost in two sets. I didn’t serve well. The audience was on my side, but that was not enough.”
In particular, the French tennis player took issue with the Italian player’s over-aggressive play: “I never expect anything when I take the court. I know what I can do. But during the first round of a Slam, you never know what to expect, especially against a player like Camila. You can’t play against her. I could have played a better match.”
What is now being staged is edition number 122 of the French Open, one of the four tournaments that are part of the Grand Slam, the second-largest after the Australian Open, which in 2023 was won by Serbia’s Novak Djokovic among the men and Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka among the women.
Among the women, in 2022, Iga Swiatek won, getting the better of Coco Gauff in two sets (6-1, 6-3) in the final. Topping the roll of honor is Chris Evert, the U.S. outfielder who lifted the top trophy on seven occasions between 1974 and 1986.
