Remco Evenepoel’s words

Remco Evenepoel celebrated by pointing to the sky his stage win achieved Saturday at the Tour of Switzerland 2023, obviously dedicating it this way to Gino Mäder, the day after his tragic death.

“I think it was clear to everyone that we had decided to neutralize the race until the sign of 25 at the finish, where the time was taken. From then on everyone would be free to do their own race. Our plan was to go over the climb with Tim Merlier to make the sprint, but the other teams set a very high pace. I tried to help him hang on, but quickly he told me to make the race for myself. At that point I told myself to go for it. I’m not a type of person to leave the race even if it’s a difficult time, I think this is the best way to honor Gino,” he explained to cyclingpro.

The race will end tomorrow: “It will be very difficult to take the jersey from Skjelmose, who is a very good time trialist. I will do my best to win the stage, then we will see what the result will be. Probably, if things go well, I should finish on the final podium. However, I have shown everyone and myself that I am improving every day, and hopefully tomorrow I will be even better so I can try to win another stage. I’m still proud of what I showed this week after the illness and all the problems after the Giro.”
