Matteo Berrettini, bitterness and apprehension toward Wimbledon: “I am very sad”
There is bitterness, and no shortage of apprehension about the upcoming calendar appointments.
Matteo Berrettini will not take part in the Queen’s tournament in London, of which he was defending champion and instead was forced to skip in 2023. A bad sign also in view of Wimbledon, which in turn according to the ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’ could be at risk. Further elucidation from the Roman is awaited in this regard.
In the meantime, Berrettini has limited himself to expressing his disappointment at missing the tournament that, in London, precedes the long-awaited summer Slam. “I feel very sad that I had to withdraw from Queen’s, not being able to defend my title. I wish the tournament and everyone involved a week full of success. I look forward to returning next year,” said the Italian.
The withdrawal will sink Berrettini in the ATP rankings: he is currently already out of the Top 30 after a first-round defeat in Stuttgart. This has not happened in four years. The player will not be included among the seeded players at Wimbledon in any case and risks having to play immediately in the first rounds against the big boys.
