Summit crosses, Cai intervenes and apologizes after controversy
Italian Alpine Club General President Antonio Montani wanted to clarify CAI’s position on the subject of summit crosses, which has stirred a hornet’s nest of controversy in recent hours.
“We have never dealt with the topic of summit crosses in any venue, much less taking an official position on it,” Montani explained in a statement. “What has been published is the result of personal statements expressed by the editorial director Marco Albino Ferrari during the presentation of a book. Personally, as I believe everyone who has climbed the Matterhorn, I cannot imagine the summit of this mountain of ours without its famous cross.”
“I want to personally apologize to the minister for the misunderstanding generated by the articles that appeared in the press, and I want to reassure him that for any subject of this magnitude our vigilant ministry will always be questioned and involved.”
