Jasmine Paolini was defeated in the first round of the “Rothesay International” (WTA 500 – prize money of $780,637) being played on the lawns of Devonshire Park in Eastbourne, Great Britain.

The 27-year-old from Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, No. 42 WTA had to bow out 63 62, in one hour and six minutes of play, to Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, No. 6 in the ranking and fourth favorite in the seeding.

The Tunisian had also won in two sets her only previous match with the Tuscan player, played in the first round of the Madrid “1000” (clay) in 2022.

Waiting now for Camila Giorgi: the 31-year-old from Macerata, No. 67 WTA, a semifinalist in the last two editions, faces Britain’s Heather Watson, No. 149 in the rankings, repechaged in extremis as a lucky loser in place of Russia’s Anastasia Potapova, No. 22 WTA.
