Wimbledon, Jasmine Paolini’s dream ends in the third set: Kvitova wins
The dream of the feat is dashed in the deciding set.
Jasmine Paolini leaves Wimbledon, after selling her skin dearly against a WTA ranking standout like Petra Kvitova. In the last match played in London Wednesday it was the strong Czech who prevailed, but she succeeded only in two hours and after three sets. The Italian played two of them evenly (especially the second), then gave up in the last one: it ended 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1.
The first set was decided in a little more than half an hour, but for Paolini only one blunder was decisive: that of the fifth game, in which she conceded to her opponent the only break point (promptly exploited). Instead, she conquers two in the next set, but Kvitova cancels them. The Tuscan resists at 4-4 by holding serve, then misses set point in the next game. It goes to the tie-break, brought home by the Italian starting with a rounded 5-0 lead. In the deciding set comes the crash, with the Czech able to take two breaks and then the victory.
Wimbledon Wednesday also featured several challenges with Italians on the court that were suspended due to dangerous court conditions or visibility problems. Thus, both the all-Italian challenge between Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Sonego and the matches between Marco Cecchinato and Nicolas Jarry and between Matteo Arnaldi and Roberto Carballes Baena will have to be resumed.
