Elisabetta Cocciaretto doesn’t stop at Wimbledon
Wimbledon: Elisabetta Cocciaretto flies to the third round
Elisabetta Cocciaretto’s path to Wimbledon does not stop. The Marche-based tennis player beats Spain’s Rebeka Masarova in two sets (6-3 6-1) after an hour and ten minutes of play and flies to the third round of the London Slam for the first time in her career.
Rocket start for the Italian, who wins the first four games of the match and has no problem closing the first partial 6-3. In the second set to make the difference, it was again an excellent start by Cocciaretto (3-0) that opened wide her way to the round of 16, where she will meet the winner between world number 4 Jessica Pegula and Spain’s Cristina Bucsa.
The Wimbledon tournament has its roots in history: it is the oldest event as far as tennis is concerned. Spencer Gore was the first winner and one of the inventors of the volley method of play. In the inaugural edition of the tournament, the Englishman defeated compatriot William Marshall in the final in three sets: 6-1, 6-2, 6-4. The following year Gore tried to defend his title against Frank Hadow, but had to surrender in three sets: 7-5, 6-1, 9-7.
