Wimbledon: Matteo Berrettini explains tears in Stuttgart
Matteo Berrettini’s words after his derby victory over Lorenzo Sonego
Matteo Berrettini commented in a press conference on his derby victory over Lorenzo Sonego in the first round of Wimbledon. “We finally finished our match. As I said at the beginning of the tournament, it is great simply to be here,” he remarked. “It is never easy to play against a great friend like Lorenzo Sonego. I’m grateful to have won, I didn’t think it was possible a few days ago.”
“I didn’t train much before this match, I didn’t know what condition I was going to play in. At the same time, my desire to play was greater than my preparation,” he added. “I really wanted to play this tournament, regardless of the results. I did not stress my body too much, but tomorrow will be difficult. I am happy, because physically I felt good during the match. It was worth it.” , Berrettini said at the press conference.
“Tears in Stuttgart? A lot of things went through my mind during that match,” explained the Italian. “I thought I was not ready, especially mentally. Coming back from an injury is never easy, even more so when you face your worst period in terms of results. I had a lot of expectations. I couldn’t handle that moment emotionally. I don’t know how to explain it. I worked hard to be here and I’m glad I won the game.”
