World Fencing Championships: Arianna Errigo returns after maternity leave

Big returns in the call-ups of the Azzurri for the World Fencing Championships, scheduled in Milan July 22-30 and valid for Olympic qualification for the upcoming Paris Games.

The coaches Stefano Cerioni for foil, Nicola Zanotti for saber and Dario Chiadò for epee have made their choices known: among the foil fencers ticks the return of Arianna Errigo, who returns to the piste after giving birth to twins. She will be engaged in both competitions, both as “soloist” and as captain of the women’s team.

With Errigo, coach Cerioni has chosen Alice Volpi, Martina Favaretto and Martina Batini, the latter – reigning European champion – only for the individual competition, while in the team it will be Francesca Palumbo who will recompose the same quartet that won the world title in Cairo a year ago. Ansa reports.

In men’s foil, full confidence to the four triumphants of Krakow: Alessio Foconi, Daniele Garozzo, Tommaso Marini and the “double European gold medalist” Filippo Macchi will represent Italy at the World Championships in Milan both in the Individual competition and in the Team Event (listed as reserve Guillaume Bianchi).

In the saber “relay” in the men’s events: double commitment for Luigi Samele, Luca Curatoli and Michele Gallo; Riccardo Nuccio will compete only in the Individual event, while in the Team event Enrico Berrè, will rejoin the quartet to which he has given so much in recent years.

Among female saberists, the summoned Michela Battiston, Martina Criscio, Rossella Gregorio and Chiara Mormile are staples (Eloisa Passaro will be reserve).

In men’s epee, coach Chiadò has chosen Davide Di Veroli, Federico Vismara (individual gold and silver at the European Championships, respectively) and Gabriele Cimini for the double commitment; only individual competition for Valerio Cuomo, while Andrea Santarelli will take his place for the team competition. Fixed quartet for women’s epee with Rossella Fiamingo, Federica Isola, Mara Navarria and Alberta Santuccio (reserve Giulia Rizzi).
