Wimbledon, Matteo Berrettini knocks out Zverev: now Carlos Alcaraz
An extraordinary performance, worth the challenge to Carlos Alcaraz.
Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon advances again, and he does so by beating in just three sets an absolutely prestigious opponent like Alexander Zverev. The Roman got the better of him in a little more than two and a half hours and taking full advantage of even two tie-breaks. It ends 6-3, 7-6(4), 7-6(5) for the Italian, who will play on center court on Monday and will face the phenomenal Carlos Alcaraz in a dream round of 16.
The challenge starts immediately great for Berrettini, who in the very first game nullifies Zverev’s break ball and gives him only three points in the following games in which he serves. He then snatches it from his opponent taking the 5-3 game and easily controls operations winning the set. Much more balance in the rest of the match, so much so that no more breaks are seen. Very good, however, the Roman to cancel as many as four to his opponent taking the 4-4 in the third set and win the match on the fourth match point of the tie-break.
“As I said at the beginning of the tournament, it’s great simply to be here. I really wanted to play this tournament, regardless of the results. I didn’t stress my body too much, but tomorrow will be difficult. I am happy, because physically I felt good during the match,” Berrettini had said even before he faced Alex De Minaur after his hard-earned victory over Lorenzo Sonego.
