Tour 2023: Woods triumphs in Puy de Dome, Vingegaard withstands Pogacar’s onslaught
The fight for the yellow jersey flares up
It was Canadian Michael Woods who emerged victorious from the battle on the Puy de Dome climb (start from Saint-Leonard-de-Noblat, 182.5 km total), taking the ninth stage of the Tour de France 2023: the Israel-Premier Tech rider ahead of Pierre Latour (Totalenergies) by 28″ and Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious) by 35″.
But behind the breakaways of the first hour, the battle for the yellow jersey broke out: in fact, Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) tried to break away from Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), trying to snatch the leadership symbol from him. The Dane, however, resisted, losing only a few seconds and keeping 17 seconds in the overall standings.
Monday is a rest day in Clermont-Ferrand. It resumes Tuesday, with a 167.5-kilometer stage from Vulcania to Issoire.
