Wimbledon, Jannik Sinner in semifinal: South Tyrolean doesn’t hide emotion
Jannik Sinner makes no mistake: he is in the semifinals at Wimbledon
Jannik Sinner beats Roman Safiullin on the grass at Wimbledon and thus gains access to the semifinals of the prestigious tournament on London’s grass. The world number 92, one of the surprises of the 2023 edition, gives the South Tyrolean a hard time in the first hour of the match, but then gives way to an increasingly precise and effective Sinner, who is therefore able to impose himself 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The San Candido native thus becomes the third Italian ever to reach the Wimbledon semifinals, after Nicola Pietrangeli, who succeeded in 1960, and Matteo Berrettini, capable of a similar feat in 2021. Circumstances that Sinner himself recalled in the interview after the match: “This victory means so much to me and to the whole movement, I made so many sacrifices to be here. It’s incredible to be in the semifinals, a unique emotion.”
For Sinner it is already the best individual result ever in a Grand Slam tournament. “Now I have to rest,” he added to the microphones of the Tournament organization, “then it will be time to regain focus and think about the next match.
As for the Wimbledon men’s singles tournament at the top of the roll of honor is the name of Roger Federer, who has won in eight editions (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012, 2017). Behind the Swiss star, who recently hung up his racket, is the trio formed by William Renshaw, who topped the field between 1881 and 1889; Pete Sampras, who won his last title on London’s grass in 2020; and Novak Djokovic.
