Mats Wilander reveals Jannik Sinner’s secret
Former champion Mats Wilander, interviewed by Eurosport, spoke about Jannik Sinner’s Wimbledon semifinal berth: “It was only a matter of time before Sinner reached a slam semifinal. I think grass is his best surface, because he plays aggressively, he has a very good approach hitting hard.”
According to Wilander, Sinner’s skiing background was decisive: “Then when I watch him on grass I’m reminded that he was a very good skier when he was 14 years old. And it’s like he’s on skis on the grass now. He glides using the tips of his shoes.”
“He has changed his serve again,” Wilander continued, “now he serves better and stronger. He has changed the position of his feet. He’s working on that.”
The semifinal against Djokovic obviously sees Jannik as an underdog against the winner of 23 Slams: “Considering the two-set lead last year, even Nole thinks Sinner is a great player on grass, hard to beat.”
“Djokovic is favored, but Sinner has to believe, it’s a great chance. Can you say he has improved more than Djokovic? If you’re in your 20s you have to believe it, there’s no doubt that Nole has shown incredible things, and he’s favored, but Jannik has to believe it, and he has to remember the two-set lead from last year.”
