Lorenzo Sonego gets hurt and is beaten
It was an immediate end to the Gstaad tournament for Lorenzo Sonego. The Italian tennis player was defeated in three sets by Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas and has to say goodbye immediately to the tournament played in Switzerland on clay.
Sonego, the No. 3 seed, was defeated by the scores of 6-3 3-6 6-4 after two hours and 27 minutes of play. Ramos-Vinolas, who had beaten another Italian, Fabio Fognini, in the first round, will face Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas in the quarterfinals.
The rather balanced match was decided in the third partial by the cramps of Sonego, who was clearly in physical difficulty. For the Turinese also a problem with the finger of his right hand, due to a bad movement: Ramos-Vinolas took advantage and found the decisive break in the tenth game.
Sonego some days expressed himself this way about being the least talked about among the top tennis players in Italy: “Actually I don’t care, I never worried about whether they talked about me or not. Everyone has their own path. Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti are two very young guys, so it’s normal to talk about them-they are the future of Italy. Berrettini is the one who has achieved the most at the Italian level: by making Slam semifinals and finals he has reached goals that I have never reached. It’s right that we talk about them.”
