KTM boss closes the door on Marc Marquez: confession
Stefan Pierer’s words
KTM boss Stefan Pierer gave an interview to the Swiss portal ‘Speedweek’ where he also talked about Marc Marquez’s compicata situation: “How many times do you think we have been offered in the last few months? Marc is in a complicated situation where he is not exempt from responsibility. His riding style does not match best with the aerodynamics of these bikes, and for that reason he falls down a lot.”
“Our goal is to become world champions, but signing Marquez is not our way,” he confessed. “We build our riders ourselves, starting with Moto3 and moving on to Moto2. We believe in Brad Binder and Jack Miller, who is back with us. I’m not saying that getting Marquez is out of the question, but it doesn’t suit us.”
With the announcement of Augusto Fernandez’s renewal, there will be five riders for four places: “First of all we have to give Pol a chance to show that he has recovered, after being out for half a season. At the moment the possibility of him becoming a test rider is not in play; it will depend on his performance. If he lives up to expectations, he will ride with us next year, he has a contract. Acosta in 2024 will be in MotoGP with a KTM. And if we need an extra seat, we will have it.”
“Team Gresini for us was not an option. Cecchinello? I am very concerned that after Suzuki, Honda may also retire. The current economic situation is not helping the private teams. For example, I heard that the Aprilia customer team is having financial difficulties and will have to be supported by them. I am sure they will tick off one or two places, and if the opportunity arises, we will take it over. We are convinced to race all five of our riders. You will see, it will all work out,” Pierer concluded.
