Tour de France: Mohoric triumphs in Poligny, Vingegaard still in yellow
Tour de France 2023, Matej Mohoric wins the 19th stage
Bahrain-Victorious Slovenian Matej Mohoric won the nineteenth stage of the Tour de France 2023 by finishing ahead of everyone in, 3h 31′ 02″, the 173 km starting in Morais-en-Montagne and finishing in Poligny: beaten in the sprint by Danish Kasper Asgreen (Quick-Step) and Australian Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citroen Team). Confirmed in the yellow jersey, however, is Dane Jonas Vingegaard of the Jumbo-Visma team.
Rounding out the top 10 are Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck), Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Christophe Laporte (Jumbo-Visma), Luka Mezgec (Team Jayco AlUla), Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost), Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) and Thomas Pidcock (INEOS Grenadiers).
Once the stage was over, Slovenian Mohoric did not hide his enthusiasm for the triumph: “I feel really excited, it was a really wonderful day. Everyone is going at full throttle, you’re afraid it might crash at any moment. I’m not the only one in the Tour who can win a stage, but only one makes it, and that’s really cruel. I didn’t win because I am the strongest, but because I focused on the key moment.
When Asgreen stretched on the climb I knew he could go all the way, I did everything I could to be able to hold his wheel. We knew O’Connor would play his chance, so I stayed in contact with Kasper until the right moment.”
